The Humanist approach to violence

We recognize many kinds of violence - not only obvious physical violence. For us, violence is anything that turns the human being into a thing, and so we also identify economic, psychological, sexual, racial, religious, and moral violence.

From this point of view, we feel there is much to change in today's society, and things to change within ourselves as well. So in addition to the usual methods of non-violence, we also focus on methods for identifying and overcoming the violence that can exist within us.

Our guiding principle is: Treat others as you would like to be treated.

Ten things you can do to end violence

  • reconcile with yourself and also with those against whom you bear a grudge
  • get actively involved in your community
  • treat others as you would like to be treated
  • get to know your neighbours
  • be the change you want to see in the world
  • learn to recognize and disarm your own 'internal bombs'
  • work for social and economic justice
  • encourage others
  • oppose discrimination wherever you see it
  • make a personal decision to reject violence in all its forms and communicate this decision to others.
